Who is Padmasambhava?

莲花生大师 · 约760年

Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche ('Precious Master'), was an 8th-century Indian Buddhist master. Invited to Tibet by King Trisong Detsen, he subdued local spirits, founded Samye Monastery, and systematically transmitted Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet. He is revered as the founding patriarch of Tibetan Buddhism.

Padmasambhava's most distinctive legacy is the terma ('hidden treasure') tradition — he concealed teachings and prophecies within rocks, lakes, and even the mindstreams of his disciples, to be discovered by future treasure-revealers (tertons) at the appropriate time. These terma texts have been continuously unearthed over more than a thousand years.

His most famous prophecy speaks of 'iron birds flying in the sky' — an astonishingly precise foretelling of aircraft, automobiles, and the Tibetan diaspora. Other prophecies address the moral decline of the degenerate age, the spread of Dharma to the West, and the rise and fall of human civilization. This site compiles representative prophecies and evaluates those that can be verified.
